A new project Link to heading
After the unfortunate failure of my invoicing app Factuvo, I have decided to pick something with a lower regulatory burden.
This time, the idea is to make a quizzing app. The objective is to allow teachers to both test students and get quick and easy corrections, saving them much time, as well as implementing a Kahoot-like gamified mode for more relaxed and fun sessions.
During the development, I will also document it here with a monthly devlog. This will run for at least a few months, until the app is in a polished state and out of beta.
Month 1 (August 2026) Link to heading
The primary objective for this first month was to try and get an MVP and design the style of the front-end. But that is not what I ended up spending most of my time on. Instead, I spent far too much time designing a new workflow I could use to both get the advantages of AI, while maintaining full ownership and understanding of the codebase and decisions. Although I won’t discuss this method yet, I will be writing a blog post about it that will be linked here once I have tested it more and have a better idea of its ups and downs. This will likely be around October.
Once I did actually get to the project, the first thing I needed was to pick a stack, and that was not too hard, I just picked what I know best.
- Go
- React (TS)
- Postgres
And then I used Docker and Tilt to manage my development environment. These were not strictly needed, just using Vite and rebuilding the Go backend would have sufficed, but I do enjoy working with Tilt.
When I was building Factuvo, I had decided to handle user accounts, authentication, and everything else myself, but this time I decided it would simply be easier and safer to just use a third-party provider, so instead I just went with Clerk. This will be a first for me, but I believe that the extra simplicity will be worth it in the end.
And finally, I got to the design. This part took a good few hours. I am no front-end developer, I far prefer working on the back-end. So I decided to heavily use AI. However getting AI to produce a site that does not look like every other is not easy. But after trying various ideas, I came up with this.

I believe this reached the right balance between a school-like look while also not looking too childish. And quite importantly, it also did not look like a generic AI frontend.
Next, actually creating the quizzes. For this I had 2 main requirements.
- When creating the questions, it should be easy to see what the other questions are.
- It should be easy to reorder the questions.
This is what I ended up with. Many options are greyed out, but that is because until I have a functional MVP, I will keep everything as simple as possible.

This design also allows you to drag the questions on the right to reorder them.
